1939 Pickup wiper motor ??
I am confused to which windshield wiper motor style my pickup needs. I see different styles/models advertised as for '39 pickups/trucks. I'm thinking it's possibly a late/early model thing..??? Could someone pleas point me in the direction of which motor style I need or how to determine which I need. Here are a few the models:
First is a Trico SK 46 |

Third is a Trico KSB 383-1 (no G)................notice this one has 1 less part/lever than the -1G on the interior side.

Re: 1939 Pickup wiper motor ??
This is the one that my '38 had in it. I can still make out the model number. Mine does have something different on the shaft. Could be a spacer, I'll check it for you later.
Do you have two holes in the header panel for the wiper controls? |

Mine has the 383-1G , original to the 39 pickup, 2 holes in header panel. Still works great and never been apart.

Re: 1939 Pickup wiper motor ??
Here is the required spacer, washer, bezel and nut that you will need to install the wiper motor. Note that the spacer is angled at one end to fit the slope of the cab roof.

I'll have to look at my header panel again. I think it is 1 hole. Any source for those parts, Bill.

Re: 1939 Pickup wiper motor ??
I have never seen one of these mounted. My pickup had an electric motor with an add on switch that I'm getting rid of.
My header panel DOES have only 1 hole. However it is over in the center. It doesn't look like that hole would line up with the external hole in the cab. Do these vacuum motors mount with the rounded part up or down? Here are some pics of what I have.....do I need to weld up the hole in the header and drill a new hole that will align? What size hole should it be? Or is my header correct? |

Re: 1939 Pickup wiper motor ??
The two hole header panel is for wiper motors with a control for the wiper speed. Ha Ha Slow or slower! The wiper motor that you showed in the #1 picture is for a post war Ford. The hole in the header does NOT line up with the hole in the cab. The hole in the header is for the off/on lever which is mounted off center. Hope this helps. You might have luck finding the pieces that go on the shaft on Ebay or at a swap meet. You probably will have to buy the entire motor to get them though.

The header should look like this photo copied from ebay.

Re: 1939 Pickup wiper motor ??
So just to verify something...do the control levers stick directly from the motor through the header panels?
I am getting ready to paint. I am thinking I should weld up the current hole, mount the correct motor and drill 2 new holes that line up. If this is correct, I need to know the diameter of the 2 holes. Thank you for all your help. I'm still fairly new to thes awesome vehicles. |

Re: 1939 Pickup wiper motor ??
Look at my post #4 and you can see the two control levers that stick out of the header holes. I welded up the holes in my header (I went to an electric wiper) so I cant give you the locations.

Ok. I have it now. Sorry for being so thick-skulled. Thanks for all you guys' assistance.
Bill, do you still have your motor and are you interested in selling it? |

Re: 1939 Pickup wiper motor ??
I have no idea if mine even works so I would be hesitant to sell it. I think you would be better off purchasing a NOS one. I would recommend that you take apart whatever you end up with and clean out the old grease as it can dry up and cause problems. It looks like the proper Trico KSB 383-1G that you show in your 2nd post is still available on ebay and the price seems very reasonable.

Re: 1939 Pickup wiper motor ??
Yeah, I figured it wouldn't work. I was really interested in the spacer and mounting pieces.

You may want to contact Kent at Clean Sweep in OR, he has the knowledge, parts, motors, and rebuilds them.

Re: 1939 Pickup wiper motor ??
Thanks Tinker. That would be great.
Is the spacer the only part that is unique to the pickups/trucks?.... the other stuff universal with cars? |
