Great American Race
The Great American Race started this morning from Jacksonville and the few Model A's are stock. Exceptions being the Model A speedsters, with hot 4-Bangers but mostly flatheads. God speed, have fun! Watch for them if they come through your town.

Re: Great American Race
A lot of the locals had their car on display waiting on the racers to arrive, not all were in this area, they were all over downtown.

Re: Great American Race
So it has to be asked - What is the Great American Race?

Some of my fellow Club Members were in some of the photos. I was not able to attend, so thanks for sharing!

Re: Great American Race
I didn't make it to Coker Tire but I sure wanted to. I bet there was a crowd there and maybe some one will post some pictures.

Re: Great American Race
To give you a idea of the distance it is around 300 miles from Jacksonville to Newnan. That's a long ride in a vintage auto.

Re: Great American Race
Hey Greg58 Thanks for posting the pics, hopefully others along the way can do the same thing. I for one on the ford barn (I'm still a newbe here) have never heard of this "Great Race" So I am enjoying seeing and hearing about this. Thanks DaleG for starting the thread!

Thanks for posting this.
The yellow 29 roadster is my brother-in-law, Taylor Merrill. If you see him at one of the stops, say Hi. |

Re: Great American Race
Good Luck everyone! Climbing Mt Eagle and crossing the Mackinac bridge to the UP of Michigan should be a high light.

The GreatRace has been around for quite a few years. It started as a 60's movie with Tony Curtiss & Natalie Wood starring, ...and then Tom McRae and the CEO of Interstate Batteries teamed up in the early 80s and hosted the cross-country trek which is more of a Time/Speed/Distance Rally than an actual race. My family & I were fortunate to have been involved in the GreatRace for about 5 years beginning in 1997 with the Sonoma to Jacksonville event. My father & I even won the Iron Horse Rally in our '31 Phaeton pictured below. If you just want to watch some fun videos of the race from years past, click on THIS. |
