Default Renew Rubber Parts With Vinegar?

I was just watching TV and saw an ad for a book of helpful hints. In the ad they asked "did you know you can make your wipers work like new with vinegar?" Does anyone have any experience using vinegar to soften or renew rubber? Thanks

Not to renew rubber but have used it to clean rust inside a gas tank. So since its some type of acidic it may soften the rubber not sure about damaging it though. I do know it takes a long time to remove rust it took about a week or more on the gas tank.

I have used vinegar dabbed onto a folded paper towel to wash the hard water spots off of the windshield of my car. Makes them pretty darn clean.

I too used vinegar in the gas tank, but only because I didn't have the guts to use the muriatic acid. Using vinegar, i still used a baking soda rinse to neutralize.

I don't know about vinegars' use on rubber, BUT it will destroy an alloy carb body if soaked for too long. It is an acid...

DuPont makes an oil named Krylox GPL105 that I use on Model A weather stripping, windshield seals, grommets, etc. It removes oxidation and leaves a nice protective coating on the parts. It's expensive but it works great. Contains NO silicon or any of the components of that Armor All junk. Here is a link to the DuPont site.

Lestoil will soften hard rubber.Leave it soak for a few days, checking it every day. I'm told ATF will work too.

I went to the local fleetfarm and got a cheap can ($2.50) of tire zap. it cleans the rubber and i mounted the tires tonight and i did not have to force them (or cuss at them) to get them on. it seemed to bring the rubber back soft

It's Krytox . It's expensive alright! We use it on all the silicon rubber and viton components in the Anaesthetic machines I work on. It contains no volatile solvents, so doesn't suck the oils out of the rubber like a lot of "dressings" do. We use the white grease form and it stays put for months (we do 6 month services on these machines). We have to wash it off and reapply each service, and it's well stuck there!

As a bonus, it's not explosive, so we can use it in an oxygen rich environment :-) Should be safe on the A

Here is my opinion on the vinegar and widers. Maybe it is not the actual rubber it is fixing but the desolving of buildup on the wirers, bugs, dirt etc that would be imbed in the rubber?

I was raised on a dary farm and Dad used to soak the rubber milking machine parts in lye water over night to soften them up. They looked and felt like new.

The stuff looks very handy, but where can you buy this, in less than a 50-gallon drum? They seem to be marketing it to car manufacturers.
I got a chuckle from this line in the brochure:

"Apply by spraying by hand or using a robot"

After my robot is done mixing me a martini, I'll have him do my car's weatherstripping... :-)
