Red face Rookie Question on Distributor

What does the knob on the right side (as is sits intalled on the motor) of the distributor adjust? The literature I have has limited info and does not tell me its purpose. Thanks

For Oiling lower bushing ...

Grasp cap and pull outward. put a few drops of oil in hole on top.

Cap is spring loaded...

The brass knob pulls out and is filled with oil to lubricate the shaft of the distrbutor.

Benson must type quicker then I.

The distributor has a minor failing in that the oiler (brass knob above - most are steel) lubricates only the lower bushing of the distributor shaft.

Aftermarket available is a shaft and cam retainer screw that is drilled and has a small oil port aimed at the upper bushing.

But you can use your oilcan and "gush" oil through the lower brass/steel oil cap. A surplus of oil MAY get that upper bushing. Excess simply follows the distributor shaft back into the engine.

If i put enough oil in the oiler, would the engine heat make it turn to vapor and it might condense on the top bushing?
