I did a seven tooth sector last winter by sliding both spark and throttle rods completely through the upper bushing while it was out of the steering column. Then fish the spark and throttle rods while the bushing is still loose through the two holes provided in the column. After locating the spark and throttle holes with their respective rods, then tap the bushing in place in the top of the column. Not easy, but you will never do it if the upper bushing is in place in the column. Don't forget to slide the anti rattlers onto spark and throttle rods before installing in the column.

Correction: I meant to say "respective holes", not rods. Sorry or the confusion.

If you are talking about inserting the rods with the top bushing already installed there is no way of installing the anti-rattle felts. If you are trying to insert the rods and not using the felts you are just going to have a lot of patience.

I had a friend shine a pencil sized flashlight up through the lower bushings to help in guiding the rods home. Locate one, then the other before pushing the upper bushing into place. it will take several tries, so be patient; it can be done.

I have to wonder how this was done in the rapid production environment of the Ford factory. Those workers must used a lot of choice words on the job!

I did mine while everything was out and on a bench, so it was not tough. But what if you got a long piece of fairly stiff but thin piano wire and ran it up thru each hole at the low end of the steering column jacket and fished it out the upper bushing, then threaded it thru the small hole in the end of the spark or throttle lever rod (where the pin goes to hold the small lever on). Then simply pull the wire down to "guide" the rod into the lower hole. The combination of rod and wire might not fit thru the hole... may need to tape the wire to the rod so that you can pull the wire free very easily after the rod gets started in the hole. Just an idea...

Good luck. For me, this is a job that might take a few beers for creating the right frame of mind.

This sound Feasible, I would add that mavbe you could crazy glue a long rod to the control rods and push and pull them through. Better than going fishing with no bait :-)

Tried using a rubber tube taped to the rod. Didn't work out well. They got stuck on the way down the column.
Going to try fishing wire tomorrow, I fear ...

I taped rubber tubes to the lever ends. The tubes got stuck going down.

using a flashlight, I observe the top inner curve of the steering column leeving hardly any space for any 'anti-rattler' ...
Looking at the original parts list, there were no anti-rattlers mentioned.

So ? Live with rattles instead ?

The rattle can drive you crazy so take the time to place them on the rods. I have wrapped on cloth bandage tape to sufficient thickness as a substitute for the cloth anti-rattlers.

Finally, removed the anti-rattle, using a light looked at the curve at the, upper side of the column.
Noticed a straight rod could never reach the tube ... So I did bend them a little. No rattle things ! They were not used originally !

Some 'fishing' and YES they appeared !

The levers are in place now ! It was a wonderful day !

Felt anti rattles were used, down approx 12" from top bushing. Alternative as recommended in other threads is to drill small hole in outer housing and squirt in small amount of rattle can low foam window insulation. See Service Bulletins pg 243,where anti rattlers are mentioned, and for bushing and rods assembly info.

Every original column that I have disassembled had pieces of rubber tubing on the rods, definitely not felt and many of these are 7 toofuss columns so the bulletins may say felt but felt was not used for long. The rubber tubing pieces are typically are worn through on one side and are hard as a rock when they come off. I replace them with rubber tubing because I suspect that the spider web or cotton candy-like felt things that the vendors sell are crushed and matted in no time and then you are rattling away.

I use the handles of flux brushes to extend and "pointify" the rods and I can get them through the holes essentially in the dark or with my eyes closed as long as the upper bushing is out....
