Smile 48 mercury sits low at rear

Hi Fordbarners,

I have a 48 Mercury convertible that sits low at the rear. Before I got the car, it had airplane type shocks installed all around. It has the original rear spring, still wrapped in metal shielding. I'm sure the spring is sagging due to age and wear. Is getting the spring re-arched my best bet? Are new rear springs available? I don't see them in any of the catalogs. Has anyone tried air shocks or shocks with coil springs on a 46-48 Ford or Merc.? Any ideas on the best way to raise the back of the car an inch and a half or two inches. Thanks for your input.

Here's one for sale on Ebay. Contact the seller and ask for the part number, the number of leafs, any broken leafs etc. Eaton spring company can make you a brand new spring. Also, contact Posie's.

There are several companies that can re-heat treat your original spring and re-arch it to stock.
I have always thought this is better than getting a new spring made from who knows what scrap steel.

Ford made his own steel and it was ALWAYS higher quality than the market stuff back in the day.

The 41-48 Ford and Mercury cars always sat higher in the front than the rear. Of course there can also be issues that cause it to sit lower than normal. LouB.

p/b,
Perhaps looking local might work too. I talked to the boss man at the county
high way garage when I needed some spring work done. In our area , much bigger than lovely Sharon, there are a few spring shops. The boss man recommended the place he takes the counties work to and they did a great job. The guy at the shop "got it" .....rounded the ends and tapered the tips.....my spring was wrapped too and once the wrapping was removed we found two broken leaves.

A wrapped spring can be hiding broken leaves. Pull it and have it checked.

First thing I would check to see if some prior owner put longer shackles on it to make it lower. I put them on my 48 Ford when I was a kid, looked cool. Al
