Replacing voltage regulator
I'm replacing the voltage reg in my 39 Merc. The old reg has rubber grommets with brass bushings. I imagine these cushion against vibration and facilitate grounding (the brass bushings). I'm considering installing new grommets into the new reg and install. I do have a dedicated ground wire running from the reg to the gen. Other option is to drill the mounting holes on the new reg larger for larger grommets and reuse the brass sleeves. Any opinions??

Re: Replacing voltage regulator
On mine, I run a 10 gauge wire from the bottom mounting bolt on the regulator, to the neg. on the battery, a little overkill ? My charging system sure works good ....

Re: Replacing voltage regulator
Hey Elwood,
Thanks for the response. I proceeded with my install by drilling out the mounting holes on the new reg so I could install some decent size grommets. As mentioned, I have a ground wire from reg to the gen case, your idea sounds great as well. Just came back a 10 mile test drive and everything is working great, indicating a better charge than before.

Re: Replacing voltage regulator
There needs to be two grounds, one between the VR and the Generator and one from the VR to ground. The second ground can be just the firewall (that's how it was grounded originally).

Re: Replacing voltage regulator
So basically the generator and the voltage regulator need to be grounded. The person suggesting an additional wire did do to endure the mounting point was a good grounding source.

Re: Replacing voltage regulator
When Ford first switched to using a VR the gen was grounded through it's bracket and the VR was grounded by one of the mounting bolts. It was quickly determined that a common ground between the gen and the VR to improve performance of the charging system.
