Re: Ford tremec rts t170 transmission
I would prefer the Type B gearset myself. It has the 26.7% OD. The AK is a Type C gearset and it has the 37.9% OD. To each their own. The last use by Ford was in early 1987.
There is a swap meet part to this forum and folks do check it. |

Re: Ford tremec rts t170 transmission
I was going of different info, ( as far as ratios are concerned)either way I didn't intend on putting this add here, but now I can't seem to get it moved. Any suggestions?

Re: Ford tremec rts t170 transmission
Correct me if I'm wrong, but with 4th gear being .7246, should not that be 27% od

Re: Ford tremec rts t170 transmission
The 26.7 % equals .7837 ratio. It feel more like just changing up another gear from 3rd. The other two common sets have more space or a longer step between gears. They all work but some can feel like you went from 2nd to 4th and skipped a gear.

Re: Ford tremec rts t170 transmission
I didn't do the math. I just looked in my T170 TOD manual that Ford issued for these transmissions. There is a thread on here where some folks discussed this conversion but it's been a while. They generally express it in percentage so folks don't get confused about the drop in ratio.

Re: Ford tremec rts t170 transmission
It's been a long time since I was in math class, but wouldn't the overdrive percentage be the reciprocal of the high gear ratio minus 1?
1/.7837=1.276 1/.7246=1.380 Last edited by tubman; 11-26-2019 at 07:17 PM. |

Re: Ford tremec rts t170 transmission
frnkeore's table seems to confirm tubman's formula. so: 1/1.26= .79365 and 1/1.36=.7353 for the ratios of the Mitchell overdrive. They aren't as far apart as I suspected. I'm glad to get that settled in my mind.

Re: Ford tremec rts t170 transmission
My information differs from the table in post #9. It lists the B series gear set as 26.7% so someone got the math wrong on the chart I have. They likely transposed the 6 & 7 by mistake.

Re: Ford tremec rts t170 transmission
I have one of these in my truck. Just love it, easiest and cheapest instolation I ever made. Jut bores out the regester on a stamped steel bell housing, welded on some tabs and bolted it. Just used a new clutch disk, Have 3.73 in the rear (Spicer 44 w/posi). Great combination, well worth the effort.
