How to install a starter button, in place of the starter rod

Been thinking about that too. Was talking to the neighbor about this just a few days ago. Maybe strap a starter button around the steering column? This foot tip-toe direct switch to a factory installed starter button thing on A Model Fords has always been a nuisance. Vaguely remember retro-fit buttons located on dashboards of old early 50s Fords once owned. Need to look into this a little deeper.

I'm about to do the same thing on my 1930 coupe. I purchased a solenoid for a ford tractor. I have seen some posts here say that if you reverse the starter switch plate it will work with the solenoid. You need to power the switch using the push button. Connect the starter to the posts on the solenoid and your done.

I added a solenoid to my modified 29 rdstr. with a Miller O/H "B" motor. I mounted the starter button in the floorboard under the carpet between the peddles. Couldn't be seen except for a slight bulge in the carpet & could use the foot as orig. to start it. NO EXTRA HOLES in the dash rail. Connected with bayonet connector in case the floor bds. had to be removed. Worked great. Sold the car last yr., it's now in Canada.

A universal key switch would work also. On my PU it would not be noticeable.

What you need to add is a starter relay, not a solenoid.

If you do not have any accessories that use the accessory position on your ignition switch, you could use that or change the switch to one that does. You would of course need to be careful to not leave it in that position.

What's the name of that gizmo that connects to the advance lever... push it all the up to retard and that pushes the starter contacts together.
