Flathead belt misalignment
Hi, my plan is to put a french flat (Simca Cargo, not Marmon) in my original '32 chassis, using '32 engine mounts.
No worry about firewall or front member, my question is about the alignment of the pulleys. I put new 8RT waterpumps from Speedway to run single belt system, probably with an electric fan. I have a misalignment between the pump and the crank pulley. The pumps are about 4mm (1/6") more toward the engine. I'll also need to change the gen, french flats runs 24v system. My options are : 1 - machine the crank pulley and get it 1/6" more toward, but the belt stay close the distributor and the engine mounts, 2 - press the waterpump pulleys out, put a washer and press back on, the belt is a little bit far away the dizzy. Is there a risk of damaging the pulleys during the operation ? 3 - nothing to do, it's not so bad What's your opinion ? https://i92.servimg.com/u/f92/18/84/50/31/p1070711.jpg https://i92.servimg.com/u/f92/18/84/50/31/p1070710.jpg https://i92.servimg.com/u/f92/18/84/50/31/p1070712.jpg |

Re: Flathead belt misalignment
Is there any reason that you can't just fabricate a washer of the required thickness to go on the crankshaft between the pulley and seal sleeve ? (this will bring the pulley forward)

Re: Flathead belt misalignment
I run an 8BA in my '32 p'up with those pumps with no alignment issues. My crank pulley
is the sheet metal design ,the spiral is part of the neck. I use a single wire alt vs gen, with a fan mount pulley and a '37 fan....no fitment or alignment issues here either. I also use the '32 mounts. What I'm trying to say is double check everything esp the crank pulley. Charlie ny [email protected] |

Re: Flathead belt misalignment
Sorry for not understanding but then it is just as simple as removing material from the seal sleeve. Making sure that the end of the crankshaft ends up below the pulley bolt mount surface.

guess. Have you tried the gen yet to see if it's pulley lines up with the pumps ? Charlie ny |

No, I din't try the gen for now but it will not be a problem. A french flat runs 24v system so I need another 12v gen to put on. It will be very easy to make it line with the pumps. |

Re: Flathead belt misalignment
The crankshaft end should be below the pulley surface to allow the pulley to actually tighten against the oil seal sleeve and not the crank end.

Re: Flathead belt misalignment
Hello Harold. Are you using a 59Ab type pulley, or the French one? I looked at a pair of 59A pumps on a French block and there is a misalignment between the french pulley (actually a 4 groove pulley) and the 59A pumps. I'm not familiar with the 8RT pumps. If I had a 4mm misalignment I would machine the pulley to get the alignment right. I believe the crank pulley needs to go backwards towards the engine, if so, it should be possible to skim some off. You might need to machine a spacer to go at the other end to make sure it all clamps up tight. Hope this helps. Mart.

I made more measurement, the diff is about 1/8". On this pic, you can see the diff between the 2 pumps, old one is on the left https://i92.servimg.com/u/f92/18/84/50/31/pompe110.jpg On this one, I put a 1/8" thickness sheet metal under the pump, now it lines https://i92.servimg.com/u/f92/18/84/50/31/pompe210.jpg I'll definitively remove some material from the crank pulley. |
