where can I find actual paint chips ?
Where can I purchase a selection of period paint colors that are on a chip sheet?
I'm looking at the computer monitor and many appear black. Colors from 35-42 would be great! |

Google paint chips. Shop around, some ask $25 or $30 a page, others only $10 or $15.

Re: where can I find actual paint chips ?
I would narrow it down to one year and then buy the restoration guidelines from the Early Ford V8 Club. They usually have color chips and a whole lot of useful information. If you are talking about the '36 you list in your profile here is what you want: https://shop.efv8.org/collections/fo...book-softbound

Re: where can I find actual paint chips ?
You will need to keep in mind that even well preserved paint chips are more often than not compromised. In other words, they no longer can be counted on 100% to accurately reproduce a correct shade.
The restoration manuals offered by the Ford Club are a nice guide but reproducing colors accurately in a modern book is near impossible. I believe one or more of those books warn the reader the chips are only to be used as a guide of sorts. If you have a specific color in mind, the best results an be obtained by finding an authentic car and then, getting at (examples) the inside of a door, beneath a dash, roof - behind the head liner... NEVER use any area that has been expose to the weather or sun as it WON'T be accurate.

Paint chips for touchup.

I just bought a $27 spray rattle-can of touchup paint from NAPA, a Martin Senour system. A half pint of paint plus reducer plus activator would cost close to $150. The color mixer gal taked me into the 2oz rattle can which lasts several years. She let me take their paint chips home to match against the car in various lighting circumstances. Then again if you have a friend whose car color you wish to copy, try NAPA. |

I've purchased various paint chip cards from car shows and swap meets, like Kube said some of these have been sitting in the sunlight for many hours, these are used to get an idea about paint choices.

Re: where can I find actual paint chips ?
Some years ago, I bought a PPG book for years 1937 to 1941, and 1945 to 1948. It is a very comprehensive book with many color chips and formulas. It is marked "Polyprints V-25. and is shown in the C&G catalog for $40, and worth the cost. Their phone number is 1-800-266=o470.
