high oil pressure
About a week ago, I ask about high oil pressure problems in my "B" engine. It ran 200 pounds when started.
Thank you for the many suggestions and ideas. After reading all of them , I came up with an idea. I changed oil, put 2 quarts of trans. fluid and 2 quarts of 10-40 oil. in the car. I ran it at idle for 2 minutes. at 1 minute, the pressure started to stabilize I changed oil and I am running 10-40 in the car now and the oil pressure is OK. At idle, 40 pounds, up to 70 when driving. That was the pressure when I first started the engine when I got the car. Thanks again for the advice. |

Re: high oil pressure
I seem to recall you had stright weight oil in there? They is one of it's inherent flaws - its SUPER thick when cold - your current multi-viscosity is the same as 40 weight when it's hot, but is much thinner than the stright weight, when they are BOTH cold.
(but both are still thicker when cold than hot) Glad it worked out for you!

Re: high oil pressure
Some years ago,I built up an A block with full pressure oiling with,I think, was a Dan Price oil pump with a built-in pressure reg.It would run at 40# hot idle & 60 # at speed.

Re: high oil pressure
I would install a pressure regulator, 70 is too high and could cause gaskets to fail. I run 35 on street engines and 65 on race engines.

Re: high oil pressure
I was thinking the same thing as Jim, plus lower oil pump pressure will be easier on the cam gears.
