Engine Paint
Hello Fellas! I'm in the process of "FRESHENING UP" my 1953 239 Flathead. With all the experience available here, I'm hoping to find the closest match to the original Ford red engine paint. hopefully something available in an aerosol can. Manufacturer and supplier would be great. Just to complicate things, I live in British Columbia. Any tips would be muchly appreciated! THX

Re: Engine Paint
Hello, I had the same question for a 52 Ford F1 v8. I think red was only used on the truck v8 48-51, with 52 being green. I couldn’t paint it green, just didn’t want to do it, I really wanted it red. Based on my research here looking at previous posts Bill Hirsch early 41 Buick red is a close match to 48-51 truck v8’s/inline 6’s. I tried it and agree comparing it to parts still with original paint. It’s a great paint, I sprayed some parts but had good results with a foam brush also.

Re: Engine Paint
I have always had better luck with a brush than a can.

Not a fan of red flatheads. yes I know some factory happened. Bronze it way cooler then red. or blue..or purple. Looking for a color posting on vanpelts and others as I have seen it before. . |

Re: Engine Paint
Tip: instead of masking off small parts you don't want painted use small pieces of aluminum foil...easy on-easy off...
Enjoy the adventure, Chap |

Re: Engine Paint
One of the old F1s Pop had was painted with bronze paint. It was engine enamel color and it actually lasted a long time. This was back in the 60s. Ford used vermilion red on a lot of stuff including the tractors.

Re: Engine Paint
Just don't buy Hirsch Thunderbird Red and expect it to be red... looked like ^%$-o-let orange to me. Ended up stripping it off and starting over with another brand of paint.

Re: Engine Paint
If you look at the color, it looks about the same as Chevrolet orange. Maybe GM stole the color from Ford. The color in the picture I posted looks like what the '52-'53 Fords were as I remember. Very close to '55 Chevy engine color. Don't think you could the difference.

Re: Engine Paint
Not sure from the original post if you are doing car or pickup. US car would have been tangerine; US truck would have been light green (very similar to Detroit Diesel green). The red stopped on US trucks in 1951 and of course the last year for bronze on US cars was also 51.

Re: Engine Paint
I really like that tangerine personally, good add JH. Also like the "turquoise" mercs. I've been less then active here, not that I add anything. Hey it's summer. Be well have fun!!!
