Default Heavy duty Y block exhaust valve cap

Hi guys!

My Y block is a heavy duty edition (truck motor) and the exhaust valves are larger than the intakes and are sodium filled.

Stupidly, I lost one of these valve lash caps while replacing the valve seals.

Any leads on replacement? The valve diameter is 0.434” (as seen online and the parts guy at Summit Racing told me) and I’m sure other Ford engines used these caps. Anyone have a link for a part number or know what other engines used these caps? Not having much luck finding aftermarket or eBay when searching for Y block.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe find a "Y" block rebuilder near where you live. They may have a few spare parts or can tell you where to find the part. Are you sure about that .434 stem Diameter? Seems awfully large to me but then I've never been inside a "Y" block.

Yes, that is the right diameter for the HEAVY DUTY truck 292 only. These exhaust valves have hollow stems which are filled with sodium to help cool the valves under extended full throttle use. When hot, the sodium turns liquid and splashes around in the stem, carrying heat from the valve head into the stem, and then to the water jacket through the valve guides.
These engines also had steel cranks, and shorter rods for some reason. Therefore they used special pistons with the pin lower in the piston.

Yeah, but race engines don't use .432' dia. valve stems.

From what I know they’re known to fail due to the valve not being solid, but that’s just what I read on the interwebs

I never saw a failure on any of those heavy duty heads except an occasional seat coming loose

The problem with any of Ford's sodium filled valves, they would occasionally break. I have seen several on the FT series and 1 on a Y block

As I remember, the valve tip is a smaller diameter than the stem to take regular sized lash cap.

Hi Darrell,

Ted sent me one but it is too small! If you have the right size can you drop one in the mail for me? PM me for the address.

The HD ENGINE exhaust valves are hollow stem and filled with sodium. Once the engine reaches operating temp or above, the sodium becomes a liquid and transfers heat from the valve head/seat to the head via the guide where it is hopefully carried away by the coolant.

The sodium after a period will become caustic and attack the inner valve stem. The cap protects the valve stem (which is hollow and weak) from being beat to death by the rocker arm.

Same method used on the FE 427 MR.
