Model A Starter sparking
I went to start my 31 Model A the other day and the starter switch sparks when I push the rod and it makes contact with the starter. It appears that the rod is hitting the sleeve going into the starter switch. Do I need to replace the switch?

Re: Model A Starter sparking
Tom W recently started a thread about failed starter switches
https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=196729 He mentions the insulating "T" that failed on some switches.. You can see the "T" on the left side of the picture. The switches are pretty simple. Disconnect the battery cable at the battery or make sure your master disconnect switch is off before you start working on it Sounds to me like a new switch will be needed, even if just for parts.... I bought this switch then used the parts from it to repair my original switch

Re: Model A Starter sparking
I made a replacement t for my switch several years ago. I used a thick piece of insulating board to make it. The original part was like a fat squared off t made from insulating board, like thick solid cardboard.

Re: Model A Starter sparking
Thanks for the reply. After looking at your picture I think the copper rod on my old switch has worn down to a point where I had to push so hard on the starter rod to make contact with the copper on the starter motor and the angle got so great that the rod sparked against the housing on the switch. I should have the new starter tomorrow and I may do as you said and just use new parts to go on my old switch.
Thanks again! |
