Ramps vs Jack Stands
I'm going to do it....pretty sure I am, anyway, going to get the pan off and figure my rear main leak out. I'm wondering which would be better for this? I feel safer with ramps, but would they be in the way at all? I don't have ramps yet and so I would need to borrow or buy them.

The only time I used ramps I drove up and over them!
If you feel safer, jack the car up and put the ramps backwards. This way they will not be in the way. |

It depends on the quality of the ramps. I have some plastic ones that started to collapse when used on my travel trailer. Now, the trailer weighs a lot more than the Model A but still it pointed out a potential problem.
Also depends on the quality of the quality of the stands. There were some that were recalled recently. Check them over carefully before using them.

Be careful with ratchet type jack stands; they can slip.

If you prefer something under the wheels; I have made cribbing stacks out of 2x4's nailed together (before they were priced like gold). |

This is what I use. Pricier than jack stands or normal metal ramps but easy to position and store. Once they are set there is no chance of the car coming down one you like it is possible with a jack stand.

Before I got my 4 post lifts I used ramps. Mine were made out of 2 X 10 staggered so the car could drive up easily on them on(measurements if memory serves me right;base piece 36" next one 30, 24,18 final one was 12 for a good base. I had a piece of angle iron lag bolted to them for a stop. Some of the steel ones look like death traps to me. Make sure you are on a firm surface. I also used jack stands on occasion good solid ones.

I have 4each 12 ton ,6 ton and 3 ton jackstands. That provides a height for about any use.

I use 16-inch old implement discs and 2-1/2 inch pipe or thick-wall tube (thicker the better) thoroughly welded together with 2-1/4 inch tube inside and half-inch rod or bolts drilled through the tubes at 2-inch intervals for adjustment. If you aren't a good welder, don't just booger-weld the pipe to the disc. Get someone with welding skills to do it right.

i have 3 sets of 4 stands made from Ford axle trumpets.One set is full height,next set is about half height,and last set is shorter than that.I got them from an old shop that closed up around 1975.A set of stands came with them made from Corvair axle housings.Those have a cupped bell at the ends that hold things up,and the bottom is just the stripped down backing plate.Those really were not used as vehicle jack stands though.They were used to hold things up while working like axles,springs,mufflers,gas tanks etc.I don't use them myself much,because they're not adjustable.They're just part of my collection of old gas pumps,torches,jacks,lube equipment,air meters,battery chargers,etc.I don't know when the old boy made them,but he was operating his repair shop when the A was new.Never had a lift.

I just bough a new set of Rhino Ramps, 12 K, to change the transmission fluid on my 1953 Mercury Convertible Merc-O-Matic. They replaced my old Rhino Ramps that were over 10 years old. They worked great. Nice and wide. I think with the 12K capability, there should be no issue. They are available at most auto parts stores or Walmarts.
