Rear end Gear reatio's
Are there 3 or 4 ratio's and what are they and the best ratio for hills Many Thanks Gord, B by the Bay

Not sure if you are talking about original ratio's or currently availiable ratios. So here are the ones I know of.
3.70:1 used only in early 28 not currently availiabe new as far as I know. 3.78:1 most common, availiable new and pelentiful used, decent with an OD 3.54:1 used originally in 29 coupes and availiable new and some good used ones 3.37:1 availiable new,, high speed gears, good on flatlands 4.11:1 optional origianlly, availiable new, good for hills and very nice all around with an OD There may be some I am not aware of, but I can not think of any others. Gord,
How big are the hills? What is your body style and load? A roadster would run good over average hills with a 3.54. If you have a 4 door sedan and plan to load it up you might want 3.78. If you have a pick up you plan to load up with 1000 pounds of bricks a 4.11 might be good. Charlie Stephens |

A combination that will work here in these East Tennessee mountains is a nicely built engine utilizing oversized intake valves and opened up pockets, a Stipe IB 330 camshaft, an enlarged intake manifold & a B updraft carb., and a 5½ or 6 to 1 high compression head. Couple that into a Mitchell Syncro-ed transmission with a 15% faster 2nd gear, and a 3.27 rear gear ratio. My experience is this combination will work in anything from a Fordor to a Roadster and does remarkable well. First gear in the transmission with that ratio will be enough gear to get you all the way through the traffic intersection without needing to change to 2nd, ...and 2nd gear is perfect for pulling hills. High gear allows you to stroll effortlessly at 60 mph.
BTW, what made me a believer is driving a Fordor with a Mitchell Overdrive that was accidently left in O/D as we drove through town. Once I realized the engine could do it well in O/D, then it just made sense. The only thing I must warn about is trying to use that combination minus that particular camshaft. Good luck. . |

The best for all around touring with a stock motor is probably just a standard rear end ratio of 3:78. Itll pull hills well and flat land it does good. But if you a high comp head or any other motor work a 3:54 or 3:27 should be okay. I would never stick a 4:11 gear in my car that i was going to tour in. Imho
