Re: First post - opinions on suspension and braking
Thanks so much for the help guys. Here's to hoping I'm just a few beers away from something a bit more solid/safe.

Re: First post - opinions on suspension and braking
Interesting tid-bit/story and update to this thread.
Based on information in this thread I went looking for someone who knows Model A's to let them take it for a test drive and get an opinion. Here's where it gets interesting. I found the original mechanic who helped my Dad get my truck rolling when he bought it in 1962! He's still working, has his own shop and is 86. With his help and recommendations I've had the tie rods, radius rods and bushings all replaced. Also got the bushings in the steering column replaced though I'm thinking the steering box should be at least looked at. He also showed me a bunch of preventative maintenance stuff I should be looking into, how to properly time, set my carb and idle. Essentially told me I had a lot to learn - in a polite way. But now my A really purrs! With the idle and carb set "right" I swear it idles almost slow enough I can hear each of the cylinders fire individually. The steering shake is almost completely gone and I have no fear at 45mph! We have a family vacation planned at the end of July and until then I'm planning to use the A as my daily driver. If all goes well - bucket list time. 300 mile trip. Thanks to all in this forum for the advice in this thread and through Private Messages. I still have my (we won't call it all original) vintage Model A on the road - safely. |

In response to your question...YES, I highly recommend both.

I took the front spring apart easily. The rear spring is the you have to be very very very careful with. It needs a spring spreader to get off of the car and some chains wrapped around it when you disassemble it. Or just take it to a shop and let them take it apart. When I go on trips in my car I cruise at 52-55 mph all day long. Take your time and rebuild parts and you will bring her back into proper for specs. The. She will cruise happily and ride quite well. Mike Ps welcome to the club and nice truck!
