Default Drive shaft bearing sleeve.

Was in a friend's shop yesterday where he's assembling an old '40s hot rod roadster. It was pretty ragged when it came into the shop a couple years ago and he's had to pick up some new bits and pieces. He has a torque tube from a '40 pickup but it needs the seal and bearing at the front end replaced. The bearing sleeve appears to be abnormal. Maybe we both have bad memories but we thought that sleeve (#4655) was a split bushing with about .090 wall thickness. What is in there appears to be a solid bushing with (maybe) .150 wall. (I'm making an extracter tool for him now so we haven't had it in our hand to accurately measure.) Does any of this ring a bell or make sense to anybody?

Dale,
There should be the split outer bushing with the large roller bearing within. Furtherest in the the bearing recess is a seal to prevent grease from leaving the bearing area, which must be installed before the new sleeve is installed. I never miced the thickness of the sleeve.

Dale, Maybe what your looking at is the housing it self if someone already removed the sleeve. The sleeve has a hole and a dimple and is split. The dimple lines up with a hole in the housing. The sleeve holds the seal in position. Search for info here, there is some great info about removal and installation of seal and sleeve. Choose NOS repacement parts if possible, lots of junk repro parts. Good luck

NO, he is not seeing things there was a bearing used in some 36- 37 drive shafts that differs from the more readily available one and easily spotted by the thick bearing sleeve.. This was a 68-4645 bearing and a 68-4655 race. These are not reproduced and should be replaced with the more conventional units.

Thanks a bunch Dick. We knew something was wrong because we could see the seal hiding behind it. My friend had a stock bearing and obviously it wouldn't fit. I'm making a puller as we speak. (he tried knocking it out but it wouldn't move- the seal cushioned the blows).
