There appears to be oil leaking from the fan hub ,is this a concern? It is a 50 mercury type hub. There doesn’t appear to be any movement of the hub on the shaft. The blades do possibly move slightly on the rivets. Not the easiest place to get a decent picture.

Probably overfilled. Remove the plug and turn the fan to get the plug hole to the bottom to drain off the excess then replace the plug.

It cant be over full as it came off the mercury and is original as far as I know. It doesn’t have a plug in the rear section only a soft seal of some sort on the shaft.
There is a small square recess in front of the pulley on the hub but it only goes through one layer of the hub steel not the inner layer.

Have a look on Van Pelts site. He has some good info on fan hubs checking etc for the 59A set up there may be some good info here for you.

Was just browsing Mac Vanpelts, while he has a good exploded view of a 42 ford to 49 Mercury fan and hub . Ours we believe is a 50 mercury so is different. I did try to take a picture of the square hole . The 4 bladed fan is riveted on to the hub.

I do not think that one takes oil like the earlier hubs I believe what you were seeing is grease coming out of the seal from the bearing.

Ah ,so sealed bearings. Hmmm so how do we get that one apart? it doesn’t seem wobbly . But if a sealed bearing is leaking its obviously on the way out.

If the rivets are loose , it needs attention , I had one that was cracked across the rivet holes and one blade flew off at 60 miles per hour it was a very nasty situation .

Ok took it off today. Man that circlip is small . Now do we need a press to
Get the shaft hub and sealed bearings apart? So the circlip holds the bearing in, what holds the shaft in the bearings?
I think we dodged a bullet , cleaned the hub up around the rivets , Lo and behold each rivet had a decent crack radiating out. Plan is to clean out cracks with a die grinder and tig weld them back up.

The bearing and shaft are not separable they are sold as one kit. See Van Pelts I think ?

Well thanks RalpM thats a good start. Did not realise the cap on the fan end came off . It does look like a big old FH truck water pump bearing .

My bearing guy found one in NZ for $35. Fitted it and the fan hub had lateral play and also end play.
Found who his supplier was and spoke to him and he claimed he got the bearings made specially and the play was designed into the bearing. Something to do with clearance when they warm up. Sounds like BS to me.
I wasn’t at all happy with the slop in it . Went to a different supplier yesterday and he said the other bearing was Chinese . He gave me one from a different China manufacturer. Fitted that one ,now no end float but it still has lateral play, everything loctited in .
The original made in USA bearing had no play but the seals were on the way out. Plus I had to Tig weld up the cracks in the blade.
Anyone have a useful suggestion?

Stop buying Chinese. Well you asked for it.
I think you should be able to find the part #’d bearing / shaft assembly listed above. I’ll do some searching on line and see what I can find.

I have asked NZ distributors and all they have is Chinese. I may well buy one from the US and get it sent to my good buddy in Buda Tx to avoid the mental $365 Shipping for a $20 item to New Zealand , how the heck do they generate the stupid numbers.? We will be in Buda TX in 6 weeks .
The ones I am looking at are in an NSK box so the chance of being genuine are improved hopefully.

Follow Fordestes advice.
If fan is loose on rivets you must fix it now
or pay a huge price later including possible injury.

That's the proper bearing; I installed one in my '51 Merc. It needs to be trimmed, and you have to have a press to install it, but mine worked great.
