Default Speedometer

The speedometer on my 1931 tudor sedan is not working. I took the cable lose from the drive shaft. I can not turn the inner drive cable. It moves in and out but won't turn. Do I need to replace the speedometer?

You can remove your speedometer and bench check it with an electric drill. Guess you could remove the cable from the transmission and attach a drill to the inner cable under the car and see if the speedo responds. If not put on some gloves and pull out that inner drive cable, may find that it is broken.
If you determine that the speedo spins OK then it is in the lower drive unit and the gear may be shot. If that is the case be sure that you order the correct one, there are a few different gear choices. Chap

I too have a bad speedometer. At some point in this life it bound up so hard that it broke the speedometer cable about 4 in from the speedometer itself. Ordered one and expect it should be in here shortly. Had to replace the cable also.

Check the speedometer head itself, the input should turn easily with the tips of your fingers. Any tighter and you will have cable problems. The grease in the speedometer is 90 years old and hard as a rock if it has not been serviced.
