Default Perch Pin Play...

I'm curious about how much perch pin play is acceptable. the axle appears to be out of round by about 3/64ths.

Perch pin? Spring perch? Front or rear? Explain 'out of round'.

Like Jim, I'm also wondering exactly what part you are talking about.
No matter which part, 3/64 is a lot of wear.

Yes, it is the front spring perch.

Placed into the axel, it rocks laterally (along the length of the axel). I'm guessing this is caused by vibration hogging out the hole a bit. If that's what it is, do you just have someone drill out the hole and press in a bushing with an ID the same as spring perch?

I'm sure he must be talking about the king pin. Axles do wollow out and should be replaced. Whatever you put in there to tighten it up will pound out. I understand, from this forum, that there is not enough axle material to sleeve it.

it's not the king pin I've tried to post a link to a photo at macs, but it won't work for me.

it's listed as "Model A Ford Front Spring Perch"

Model A axles are cheap, I’d get a new one instead of trying to add a bushing.

Although, it’s possible it’s not the axle but the spring perch that’s been worn.
If not torqued properly, it happens.

Not sure of your location but if you want a good used axle, Bert's in Denver should have you covered. I wouldn't want to use any axle with any sort of play in the spring perch holes.

Thin ice and frozen feet. If the pin locks the perch in place your good. The taper on the bottom of the perch casting and the taper on the top of the nut will position the perch. The pin will lock it for vertical motion.

Some -run out of the hole is normal. If you put the retaining pin in place and tighten the nut, it should drive the kingpin to the outside and "pin it" against movement.

How much is tolerable IS a question however. Front to back movement of the pin in its hole during service is unacceptable.

A local machinist DOES on occasion put bushings in the hole. His rationale is along the lines "I've never had one fail, never seen one failed, never heard of one failing after bushing." And I expect he may rely a lot on "if it doesn't fail in installation then that is proof of a long service life" (Think the side compression of the retaining pin/wedge.)

The engineer in me would do it - but be sure to put minimal material to the bush, perhaps no more than is necessary to "clean up" the hole - after all, that material has already been "displaced" and it hasn't failed yet.

The one axle I saw the machinist doing this to he had mounted in his bridgeport and was in the process of fly cutting the bushed hole - which brought the subject to my query.

When I restored my 29 AA axle, I noticed the castle nut went past the cotter pin hole, so I removed the nut and found 2 fender washers, they were about 1/16" thick, drilled out the center to the same as the shank, tightened the nut, it worked.
good luck

Watch out for the taper on reproduction perch pin nuts. I have been caught out with the taper on the new nuts a complete mis match with the taper in the radius rod resulting in very little contact between nut and radius rod.

We make a practice to check the perch nut for taper and recut if needed. As for nuts going on too far, Snyder's has shims to help that issue.
