Took the old girl for a short run, 15 miles, first proper run since I bought it, still got a few things to do. Getting a bit of a problem, get to 30mph and doesn`t want to go further also temp seems a bit high, at the far end of the normal, need to sort that, but anyway here`s the fruits of my labours........

Both of your problems could easily be timing... have you checked?

Don't be fooled, the only thing senior is my age your never to old to learn new tricks, no I havn`t checked timing yet, thought I`d take a look tomorrow, sun was over the yardarm, time for refreshment .........

Sounds like timing issues to me as well. That's where I would start.

Almost as soon as I passed my driving test I had "Yanks" as we called them, `65 Mustang 289, `63 Olds 98, Chevvy Monte Carlo to name some, I also spent time as a Coach driver, all over British Isles and Europe, driving off the ferries on to rhd roads with rhd coaches just seemed to come naturally........

I highly recommend adding a timing tab and marking the belt pulley for TDC. I was having issues related to timing and thought I had it very close until I checked with a timing light. My max advance was only 5 deg BTDC. After I made the pointer and marked the pulley I was able to correctly set max advance to 28 deg BTDC.

Thanks for the + replies, I know it`s not to everyones liking but.................
Changing the windwing glass to plain, a mistake in etching them, the mirrors are small enough, the etching makes them even smaller, would like larger mirrors.................
Had a look at the timing using the link ( Marco Tahtaras) and I`d like to think I`ve got it right, but, starts on the button, idles nice until you rev it, with the gav open 1/4 turn will only rev to about 1000rpm, open the gav 11/2 turns will rev to about 2000 with lots of popping and banging. Plugs are sooty. Put it to bed for the night, have another go tomorrow.

Hey Dennis, close the GAV back to about ½ turn. Unscrew the gas line from the carburetor, open the valve and see what kind of flow you have, should be steady stream, if not, crack the gas cap and see if it improves, then pull the filter out of the front of the carburetor, clean and replace, as well as any other filters you have inline.

Also, if you don't have the pencil filter that goes in the top of the tank valve, get one and install it.

Adjusting the GAV, Chief taught me to run at a constant 20 to 25 MPH, in second, & adjust it for the BEST, SMOOTHEST running. Then he said, "Then leave it ALONE & don't DIDDLE with it, you'll WEAR out the THREADS"!!!

Did you adjust the mixture when it wouldn't go further? Do you know the choke rod is also carb mixture?

Had a play with the GAV but got interrupted, did see an improvement but couldn`t road test .......................

as listed above it could be a fuel delivery problem. you may want to check for compression. no matter where your gav is it should drive. maybe a couple pops on an up hill with it lean. the run problem your describing could be result of a stuck valve or two. If you dont have a tester you could use the thumb pop off method.

Are you sure your carb is getting full throttle travel? The carb's throttle arm may only be traveling 3/4 of the way instead of bottoming out at the stop peg. This is especially a likely scenario if you have changed carbs without bending the accelerator linkage arm to match. I posted about this problem the other day in a thread about Zenith carbs.
