Generator lube

How do I lubricate the generator front pulley? I see nothing down there that would receive grease or oil.

It's a ball bearing, you shouldn't need too.

Depends on the quality of the bearing, some have no seals, some have ceramic seals, some have a rubber/vinyl type seal. On poorly seal bearings the lube part of the grease escapes, the grease hardens and the bearing goes bad.


The really bad ones actually have a shelf life, if they sit unused the lubricant separates/seeps out of the bearing and sits in the bottom of the container they are stored in. I have seen this happen where I worked when they did not rotate stock for a couple of years and some bearings were out of box 2-3 years old

There is a small cover that needs to be pushed to the side to expose the oil hole. Look just behind the pulley on the top side of the front plate. If it's been rebuilt, then it may have a sealed bearing, so no oil is required.

I found it at last! If you don't know its there, its very difficult to see, even shining a torch down there. I'm surprised that the front bearing has not seized, as its never had oil before and I have driven the Model A for many years.
