engine install
I think I saw this question asked but can't find the thread, so I'll ask it again.
I have the engine and trans out of my 48 coupe. Ready to put it back in. Should I put the trans in supported by a jack and then install the engine, or should I assemble the trans to the engine and put them in together and then mate it up to the u-joint?

If your engine hoist has a leveler ($30 at Pep Boys) to adjust the tilt of the load, I think it is easier to install the engine and transmission together, just to avoid the fight of getting the engine and transmission closely enough aligned for the transmission input shaft to slip into the clutch disk and pilot bearing. Sometimes they just clunk together; sometimes they just won't. Lining up the U-Joint is a lot easier.
If there is any doubt about the condition of the transmission mount, replace it to reduce chatter problems. |

i have the heavy duty leveler and in my case, the long six cylinder. it was easier to do the tranny first then the engine. The 8 will be shorter I would probably do it as an assembly. Question could be asked, how did it come out? If as an assembly how hard was it?
drolston is right, i have had my engine in and out several times. sometimes it just goes together sometimes its a fight. |

I always figured if I'm going to pick up the motor with a lift I might as well pick the motor and transmission.

I just put the engine back in my '47 and I put the trans back first. (I rebuilt it while the engine was at the machine shop, so was looking for something to do.)
Yes, it is easier to slip the combination into the universal, and maybe next time that's how I'll do it. My biggest problem was that the boom on my engine hoist was too short.....got the block out ok, but couldn't get it back in. I have the leveler. So, bought the 2 ton hoist at Pep Boys with the longer boom and removed the bumper and splash pan.....that was the key for me. Working with the inspection plate off the trans flange, I was able to see the shaft line up with the clutch disc. Got some longer trans bolts and gradually worked around the trans/block and slowly pulled the two together....carefully. It's a really satisfying thing when it's all buttoned up after somewhat of a struggle! Good luck.....regards....Dick. |
