Transmission/Gears/Animation
Looking for some critical criticism. The You Tube video below is just a rough draft of what is to come. Before putting more hours into it I would like to know how it looks on your computer. The graphics are great on my computer but once uploaded it does not look as nice as I anticipated. I can change it all including colors background and text. In addition let me know if it looks to busy, I included a lot of information in a small area. I set it up to play twice.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTx1...ature=youtu.be Once the general format is chosen I plan on animating:How it works, What is meant by non-synchronized gears, and gear speed when double-clutching. (Open for other suggestions) In the end there will be sound.

Re: Transmission/Gears/Animation
Worked great , very cool idea . Wish I knew how to do that fun stuff . It's a lot of info going on at one time , but just watching it over a few times takes care of that . Again , I like it .

Re: Transmission/Gears/Animation
Just nit-pickin
The grey background makes the red lettering shift point hard to read (upper left). The grey needs to lighten up or the red needs to be bolder. Add arrow to the output shaft Also I would recommend making the shift pattern lines red or black and the shifter ball change to red. I also think I would add a slide between the shift point to say something like "Shift from neutral to first" etc. Animation seems fast when trying to look at everything and understand what is going on. The problem is that it is hard to sit and wait for something you already know. Regards GDG |

Re: Transmission/Gears/Animation
Nice what computers can do. I wondered how it all worked when I was 13 years old, and so I took one apart, as the illistration in the book did not show the fact that the input shaft and output shaft were separate. It looked like one shaft in the book. Taking it all apart taught me a lot.

Re: Transmission/Gears/Animation
That is really neat.
Can you make the input shaft, the output shaft and the gears turn while you shift? Maybe later you could add a grinding noise while shifting from first gear to second gear! David Serrano |

I am not usually a fan of utube usually too long & drawn out, but I did enjoy the animation.

Nice job! I just hope nobody asks where you found the colored gears.

Re: Transmission/Gears/Animation
Nice job! I bet you have a lot of hours invested already. I do a little 2D CAD and have a small 2.5D router table and have looked into 3D drawing and maybe a 3D printer. Looking forward to the animated version!

Great - although a little fast for my slow brain and tired eyes.

Re: Transmission/Gears/Animation
I'm with aermotor. I found it hard to read the text and follow the gears and color shifts at the same time. Might help to slow it down (a lot); present the text and then show the animation; let each state run longer.

You can change the speed of the animation. It may be best to pause it 1st then change the speed and then resume play. Try .5 or .25 to slow it down |

Re: Transmission/Gears/Animation
Great job... I do agree with the others on the coloring and speed for us to process.. Maybe it would help if the shift rails were a different color also.....I am by far no expert on doing this, so I am sure it will all be worked out in the end just like all your other Model A animations....
Thanks for doing this .. |

Re: Transmission/Gears/Animation
Beautiful work. Like others, my feeble brain could not take it all in for max consumption. Many more frames to smooth the movements would help me a lot.

Re: Transmission/Gears/Animation
It's interesting to study the power flow through the trans. With a trans on the bench & the shift tower OFF, you can shift it into each gear, turn it, & study the FLOW. Then, you discover that the shift rails/forks, move in the OPPOSITE direction of the shift lever! Understanding this stuff helps, when you're doing "ARMCHAIR" diagnosis of a trans problem.

Re: Transmission/Gears/Animation
- Animate the motions of the shifter and the gears (show their sliding movement; should be possible, in e.g. Solidworks, don't know which SW you're using)
- Add colour codings to other gears as well (e.g. the cluster gear, reverse idler gear, etc.) - Before showing the shiftings, introduce each of the critical parts with flash-up text (each of the gears, the forks, etc.) - Add rotational animation of the input, output shafts and the gears Nice to see modern technology applied to our old hobby. I'm still waiting for the day when solid model / *.stp files are available for all Model A parts. If it's still not done when I retire (20 years?), maybe that's what I'll do. Great work! |

Re: Transmission/Gears/Animation
Great video, I now understand why the shift lever ball should be round and not almost square like mine !
