Mains Knocking
My rear and center mains started knocking after a shortish trip with my A. I used a mechanics stethoscope and dialed it down to the rear and center. My engine has less than 600 miles but it was rebuilt many years ago.
I haven't pulled the pan yet, but how should I go about checking for issues? Thanks! |

Re: Mains Knocking
Sounds like a "pull the engine" scenario.
MUCH easier to work on an engine in a stand rather than facing up from underneath. I would pull, get a stand you can "flip" ($50 at Harbor Freight) Make or buy an "attachment plate" which connects the engine to the stand (or use the included brackets which don't impress me) and start getting your hands dirty. You're probably past any warranty given the time and the miles, but you may find the problem "recoverable" by removing shims - or you may find "shade tree" engine mechanic. Not putting in the helical oil groove could be very likely. Good luck. Been there done that. Joe K
