If you will be in Detroit in August, you don't want to miss the Woodward Dream Cruise.

Sal's advice is excellent. Also, visit the Henry Ford Museum and other historic sites outside Detroit downtown area.

Re: trip in the east and canada
I see you'll be in Detroit and Chicago. An excellent side trip would be to Auburn, Indiana. The Auburn, Cord, Duesenburg Museum is there, as well as the Early Ford Foundation collection and a place called the American Auto and Truck Museum, which is very close to the A-C-D, but is in actuality a separate operation.
I love these old Fords, but the A-C-D is the best car museum I have ever been to. Others may have more quantity, but for quality, the A-C-D is the best. |

Syracuse Nationals. July 19-21, 2019 at the New York State Fairgrounds, Syracuse, NY. A good show with a swap meet. I go every year.

Re: trip in the east and canada
map out your route and where you will be stopping. Do a search for car shows and swp meets in that area. You'll probably do ok no matter what but if you ask here about specific shows you may get some feedback. Iola is not too far from Chicago but I'm not sure of the dates. It's worth seeing. Don't look for nearby hotels but plenty of camping.

Re: trip in the east and canada
A major museum is in Cleveland Ohio ( on Lake Erie ). Between the auto ( 170 cars plus memorabilia ) and aviation displays, and the Western Reserve Historical Society, one could use a day or more. Google Crawford Auto and Aviation Museum.
Do be sure to take in the sights of Niagara Falls. My favorite view is on Goat Island. One can stand right near the edge and feel the power of moving water. This is a must. To travel as far as you are going to, and not see it would not be sensible.
