I love those old ads. The only negative thing I remember about the '51 Fords was that the chrome wasn't as good as previous years. I understand that this was because of the Korean War and some of the materials were denied Detroit.

How many of you noticed that the 51 that Ford was driving over the hills, potholes, desert, etc had wide whites? And the one that the family actual drove had the standard black walls.

Hi Fordbarners, As a 'new' owner of a sweet '51 Fordor, I'm grateful for any info pertaining to the Fords of that time. I'm enjoying the new V-8 challenge after years of messing with Model As. You can't beat those B&W promo movies. I recall in 1967 I toured the New Process Gear Co. in Syracuse, NY and saw them "shift testing" their 4-speed transmissions for days on end until they broke. Amazing.

If they had taught them not to rust the import market never would have gained a foothold in the US. We'd still all be driving 51 Fords.

Are not the late '40's early '50's Fords still considered the toughest cars ever made?

I recall that they are much sought after for grueling races (Peking to Paris on one set of tires) and the Mexican road races.

Seems they have the most overbuilt frames, strongest metallurgy, and simplicity of design.
