Default German Flathead Ford V8 Engine

German Ford V8 Truck Engine - Notice that the rear portion of the Heads are larger than the front half? Also notice the unusual position of the Distributor at the rear? What does it drive off? Has anyone got any information on these unusual Flathead Ford V8 Engines?

I have a set of those heads on the shelf if anyone needs them...and i think Bosch didnīt make anything that fitted the front so they drove the distributor off the oilpump instead.

The distributor is driven by a splined shaft that engages into a female spline that extends up from, and is part of the oil pump drive gear.

Thanks for the information. Very interesting. Here is a picture of one that I found on the Internet showing the rear mounted Distributor.

Mercman, that last photo is of a french flathead; note the 8BA style heads. The Frenchies also had the rear mount distributor, as did the 'big block' 337.

Some misinformation creeping in here.

I had a German motor in my Coupe. The German motors had the distributor at the back, French have them at the front. On a French motor, a governor/and rev counter (not a tacho, like an hours meter) mounted at the back.

On my German motor I removed a cover at the front and fitted a conventional distributor.

I can't remember which heads mine had, I think they were 8BA type, yes, I'm sure of that because I have the water pumps on Old Rusty and they have the extra port at the top. Obviously the German motors developed along with others as time went by.

French have the distributor at the front, it is a vacuum only device, and is often swapped out for a chevy conversion, or in my case I used a 59A type cam and 2 bolt front cover for a crab dist. at the front.

People have used both the German dist at the back and ford type at the front on a German motor for twin plug heads. Or at least I think In saw that once, may have imagined it.

The German motor in my coupe was a beautifully smooth motor.

Mart.

The G29T was produced in Koln after the war. I think the 29T preceded it. Ford of Koln (Cologne) produced similar engine to the USA but they did use a Bosch distributor at the rear.

Matford French engines were produced before the war then SAF produced engines after the war. Most were like the little V8-60 but they did still manufacture the 3.9 litre Mistral truck engine that was also used in the Vendome and Comete Monte Carlo models. These had the distributor on the front like an 8BA type but they still had the center coolant exits on the heads. They do have a pad at the back of the engine but I don't think it was for a distributor. A drive for a governor is more likely. If it was then they plugged it off for later use of the front mounted type. They will usually have SAF markings on them. The exhaust manifolds were very unique.

According to the book "40 Ford" by Joseph P. Cabadas, Ford Werk's Cologne plant started producing the 21 stud V8 in '35. The two electric motor break-in pictures in the book show no rear mounted distributor, so the rear mounted distributor may have started with the later 24 stud engines.

In 1971 I rode on a rural trolley going ro Westfalia. The man at the controls had to shift gears as we accelerated up and down the hillsides. At the first rumble my ears perked up, after a few stops I remarked to my buddy. That's an old Ford truck motor!
