Default Re-winding horn field coils?

Assuming the correct guage wire is used, what's more important, the number of turns or the total length of wire used? I can either duplicate the number of turns that the old horn field coil had or measure the wire length that the old coil had and duplicate that length with no regard to the number of turns. Because it's tough to be perfectly neat with hand winding, I doubt if the number of turns and wire length could both be duplicated together. So, what's more critical, length or number of turns? Many thanks!

Information for the field coils:

6 Volt

(1) The 2 field coils are wound in opposite directions.
(2) Original field coil wire is 20 gauge.
(3) a. 45 turns using coated wire.
b. 6 to 7 turns per layer, not perfect is OK
(4) After completing, spray with varnish or epoxy insulating enamel.

Mike,
Have you had any experience reducing the armature and or field coil turns to make a 6-volt horn work with 12 volts?

Actually you'd want more and finer wire to change to 12 volts.

I was thinking on the armature rewind , seems I read somewhere to rewind the armature to convert to 12 volt , was unaware you could just rewind the field coils to convert , See you learn something every day on this site , magic,

I have wrapped field coils on two Model A horns to convert to 12 volt. Used 24 gauge and wrapped 100 turns on each field coil. Yeh, it worked but, she just does not have that same sound the 6 volt horn gives. The motor starts too fast to give it that aaahooogaaah sound. More like hooga.

Several years ag I went ot a electric motor shop to see if they would rewind it for me. He said no, but I will sell you the 24 ga coated wire. I thought he meant maybe 50 feet of wire. He brought out a spool 18-20 inches in dia htat must have at least 1000 ft on it and said "you can have the whole spool for $20.00 bucks. I bought it.
