I forget. Which way does the adjustment go on the hair spring to make the speedo read slower? Mine is about 5 mph fast. I think it goes to make the spring shorter, away from the fixed point. I test the speedos with a drill motor using the right rpm to read in the normal range, about 50 mph. If after it is adjusted, it reads 5 mph slower at the same drill motor speed, then I know I have fixed it.

I have a Waltham speedo on my '30 Roadster and it reads about 5-7 mph fast also. Is there any adjustment on the Waltham unit?

I had papanick rebuild my frozen stewart/warner oval speedo. Great job, everything now works, speed is accurate, looks good, faster than fast turnaround. Got a round speedo I'll be sending after my blown off garage roof is repaired. Hate the rain and wind! From "sunny" California.

I had the same problem of a slow speedometer and odometer- 5.4% slow and low. I fixed it by changing the speedo gear from a 19 tooth gear to an 18 tooth gear (less teeth=faster rotation). My unit is now "spot-on" as verified by radar and highway mileage markers. Worth a try. Good luck !

Yes that works some time. But if it is in the speedometer then it should be serviced.

Ellerman Speedometers out of Wichita, Kansas (316) 722-2107 has done several for me. He's a member of MARC & MAFC and advertises in the The Restorer & Model A News. He's also doing a seminar for the High Country Tour in Breckenridge, Colorado in June.

Hi papanick -
I have a nicely functioning rebuilt speedometer in my early 1928 Model A except for the fact that it generally reads about 7MPH on the high side. Is this something that you could recalibrate for me and also check the unit for overall operation? Thanks, Don Stearns Email donaldfstearns@gmail.com Cell. 352-409-8282 |
