Was the plate cast iron or aluminum? If cast iron, curious as the weight difference between a Ford cast steel drum and these.

The ones on the 76 were aluminum. The lower unsprung weight was one of the big reasons for using them.

The backing plate and the inside pressure plate are cast iron. The outside hat that spins the fiber ring is aluminum. I think the fiber ring/disk is magnesium.

Hey Pete:

That's what I was thinking about. That's a pretty big hunk of metal spinning around if cast iron.

Boy, you guys get me to thinking about the old days and all kinds off trivia comes back. The 76 was originally built by Rolla Volstedt from Oregon who went on to build Indy cars. It was owned by "Suds" Sutherland when I took a ride in it.
Suds had a big foaming beer mug painted on the deck lid.

The way I heard it was they were going to be used on the Tucker cars until they went bankrupt. Bell Auto Parts bought up the remaining supply of parts and sold them to the racers and hot rodders. The rumor is that maybe 200 sets were sold. Either the 1948 or 1949 Hot Rod show featured a giveaway '32 roadster that had Kinmont brakes on it.
