Silly Question
How do I know which engine I have. 24 or 40hp. Looked at different pics of engines and to me they all look the same. I`ve had my car since Nov last year and have just gotten round to look at the reg doc. Says I have a 2.2ltr engine but this is prob. the DVLA (our vehicle licensing agency) interpretation of the import docs. The reg. doc. gives an engine number and a vin number but where the engine number should is blank ! (as far as I can see)

Re: Silly Question
The 40hp motor is quite grunty with lots of low end torque. The 20hp motor is gutless. But if you have only ever driven a 20hp then it might be harder to know what you have.

Re: Silly Question
Hello Dennis
This is the best pic I've got right now On the English 14.9 (RAC) hp engine you can get your thumb on a flat between the cylinder castings on the oil filler side of the block, between 1 and 2 and 3 and 4. On the bigger 24hp (again RAC rating) engine you can't - there is no flat between the bore castings on the outside. Cheers Juggs Dark unseasonably cold east Suffolk UK |

I`ve cleaned up the place where the engine number should be, I might have done more harm, I used a scraper and metal polish, but can see no signs of a stamping......

Re: Silly Question
Engine # A3923014 would have been made in September 1930.

Re: Silly Question
I have a Diamond block that has no numbers. It also has hard seats on the exhaust valves.

Re: Silly Question
It`s not unusual then, not to have an engine number on the block ? where did the number come from, I guess it must have been on the original paperwork. I contacted the Texas dmv to see if I could find out a bit more about the car but that was a waste of time. I paid another agency for a "NMVTIS Multi-state vehicle history report", not a lot of good, a title was issued by Texas on 04/29/1998 and that's all I have.

Re: Silly Question
A "Diamond Block" has cast-in diamond symbols on the block that look like the pattern maker's mark or a company's trademark. Some believe the Diamond Block is stronger / somehow better than the Ford production blocks, but this is pure conjecture. There are no Ford records I know of about "Diamond Blocks."

Re: Silly Question
OK now I am going to push my luck with you all, I had a box of bits which came with the car, mostly the parts removed when the boot, sorry trunk, was converted to a rumble, and old spark plugs etc., but there is an odd piece I can`t identify, might not belong to the A......

Re: Silly Question
As for Diamond information, follow the link posted in reply #3 and scroll to the bottom; there is a link to the Diamond engine information. Along with the diamond marking, they usually have the casting date on the block. You may have a B engine. I was given an A engine recently that turned out to be a '37; B crank and cam
The "boot" reference: with an MGA, MGB, and TR6, it is normal |

Re: Silly Question
While checking to see if I had a "diamond" block I found that I did not.
What I did find was an "X", or what appears to be an X. If you zoom in on the pic you can clearly make out the X. Does anyone know what that would mean or indicates, and please don't tell me it means a condemned/bad or mis-machined engine, as it seems to run fine. I'm hoping it's a good mark or just a fluke in the casting and mean nothing.

Re: Silly Question
I have the same part and am not sure what it is but suspect its is a leftover from a truck to rumble conversion.

Re: Silly Question
Post # 13:
Actually I think that part should have remained in the car on the conversion from trunk to rumble seat. When I installed new panelling and rumble seat on my roadster, this piece was still in place. It actually support the side panel and there is a provision to install a bolt to hold the panel in place (which in my case never did get installed (the bolt that is)) |

Re: Silly Question
When it arrived from Texas it was in a sorry state and I had a tin of red engine paint hanging around, I was waiting for my order from Snyder`s so I cleaned up the engine and gave it a coat, the jury`s still out on it.

Re: Silly Question
I thought it would be a 3.3 as it came from the USA, our DVLA must have been given the wrong details. It would be nice to know the history of the car, what it`s done and seen over it`s 85 years...................

That looks like a support that goes from the trunk pan to the rear underneath the trunk opening. The big hole is where a bolt goes on the spare tire mount. |
