35 brake switch help

Okay will do. Someone mentioned the blinker switch. Here’s a photo of my circuit board.

There has to be something beside the blinker switch that ties the brake light wiring in with the turn signal wiring. If it has both front and rear turn signals it often involves 7 wires. There are various ways to accomplish this, one is using a converter box designed for trail lights. I'll post an example of that wiring setup, but yours could be entirely different. Are the brake wires color coded different from the other wiring so you can trace it back to the turn signal switch?

Highway 15 is an American Autowire product. Here are some of the wiring diagrams (fuse panel and turn signal wiring). It is setup to use a GM column connector to a GM turn signal. Yours appears to be wired to a toggle switch. I would start by seeing if the color coding for the brake/turn signal lights match these diagrams. Yellow for the left and Dark Green for the right.

Okay, I’ll keep looking. Yes I had front and rear blinkers. I removed the front ones some time ago though. I can’t really tell the colors of the twilight wires because they’re all wrapped up. I’ll do a little more digging though.

The wires that would have gone to the GM connector are:

Yellow/Purple - Turn Signal Power from the Fuse Panel
White/Orange - To the Brake Switch
Dark Green - Right Brake Light Bulb
Yellow - Left Brake Light Bulb
Light Blue/White - front Left Turn Signal
Dark Blue/Yellow - front Right Turn Signal
Brown - Hazard
Black - Horn

There would also be an Orange wire from the Fuse Panel to the Brake Switch

The wires I can see connected to your Turn Signal Switch are:

Yellow, which would be Left Brake Light Bulb
Gray(?), may be one of the front turn signals
Dark Green, which would be the Right Brake Light Bulb
White, would go to the Brake Switch
Blue, again may be one of the front turn signals
Purple, might be the Yellow/Purple power wire from the Fuse Panel

The wiring colors don't appear to match, but I have seen that before on wiring harnesses!
Looking at your fuse panel photo, the wire connected to terminal 7 appears to be Purple, which would match the wire on the toggle switch.

the pins on the bulb is probably straight across from each other, so you can get them turned wrong in the socket, and have the brake light coming on for the parking light and visa versa

Found the issue!! Thanks guys for all the help I really appreciate all the wisdom.

So all the wiring was correct from the fuse box to the toggle however someone switched the ground and hit wire where it was spliced into the old DS taillight wiring. I simply switch’s the two wires and now it works fine.

I do however need to change out that socket because it uses a different bulb and is a lot dimmer than the updated PS lightbulb socket.

A good idea on some of the wiring would be heat shrink tubing. With the pull-apart connectors it should be easy to slip a piece on each side of the connection.

They were all taped up and covered really well I just had to remove it all the find the issue. Everything will be covered up again when I’m finished. 👍🏻👍🏻

A couple of observations:

Hopefully someone did not misconnect the ground and hot wires. More likely they connected the rear light feed to the brake light and vice versa.

The bulb that has the two bayonet pips opposite each other and not offset can be fitted the wrong way around.

I don't know what is exactly the case here, but if that unit with the wires misconnected is the same side as the bulb with the non offset pins, then the wires may have been correct all along, just the bulb was the wrong way around.

The lamp units receive two feeds, the ground return is via the car's body and frame.

Could be but either way I’m replacing the DS housing to install a new socket so both right and left taillight bulbs match. Right now the PS has a heck of a lot more candle power than the DS does.

Damn, so I ordered a new DS tailight and installed it and bam still having issues. The DS brake light wouldn’t turn on and the turn signal only worked for like a minute and then stopped. I’m leaning towards the turn single switch. I’ll replace it and see what happens. Oh the joys of cars lol.

Yes, I just replaced the complete rear housing, socket, wires, and bulb.

Is your ‘35 ford on 6v or 12 volts? Will the Harley switch support a 6 volt system? I’m thinking of converting to the Harley switch for lower pressure but have an additional pair of brake lights for increased visibility. I want to make sure the switch will support it.

Solo, I use the Harley switch and it works great. You may have to change the terminal on your wires. When done, saw the old switch apart with a hack saw to see how it works.
