Default Stewart Warner Armature Threads

Can some one tell me what the thread size is on a Stewart Warner horn armature ?

I am quite certain that it is left hand treads, but I cannot measure the diameter or threads on the broken one that I have.

I appreciate any information.

Will, ...I totally forgot about that I was supposed to send you a couple of horns. If you recall, I told you that I needed you to send me an e-mail to remind me!! I leave in the morning for San Diego. I can send you a S/W horn or two when I get back if you still need them by then.

You're right, I forgot as well. I may have to learn to fix this issue. So far, I have heard of over 38 SW horns w/ broken armatures.

I believe that MSC industrial sells a range of LH taps and also taps in the odd thread sizes that appear some places on old Fords.

Bruce,

I believe Will is looking for a die, which MSC should have as well.

Make it 39! I found out that they were left hand threads after I broke mine. I had to glue the ratchet wheel on with JB Weld. It worked for a while until the windings started shorting out due to age.

This seems to be a prevalent problem, so I guess I better try to figure a way to repair mine. Replacements are VERY hard to find and folks are quite proud of them if they have one.

So far I have identified the threads (thanks Don), acquired a tap and a die, ordered #8-32 left hand threaded rod from McMaster-Carr and have ordered the #27 (.144") tap drill.

I have been able to cut off the broken remains of the original threads and have cut a flat surface and cut in a 'starter drill' and am waiting for the tap drill to get here.

It is my intentions to tap a left hand thread, insert a piece of the threaded rod and loctite it in place.

Sounds like a great plan. Unfortunately that exceeds my skill set. Please let us know how it turns out.
