46-48 steering wheel question
Hi guys, I picked up a 46-48 wheel that I'm restoring to use on a project and I have a couple questions.
1) other than the chrome horn ring, spring and wheel itself, are there any other internal parts? My new spring just seems to float around and doesn't seem to be the way Ford would have built it. 2) where does the horn wire go? Down the center of the steering shaft or next to the shaft and down the column? ...or other? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Carl |

Re: 46-48 steering wheel question
On a 1940 the horn wire runs down a hole inside the center of the column and out the bottom of the steering box. I think yours is the same.

Re: 46-48 steering wheel question
Yes wire goes through center of column there is nothing that holds the spring centered on the steering wheel

Re: 46-48 steering wheel question
There is a rubber horn button insulator (11A-3672) that goes under the steering wheel. C&G has them for about $4.

As I recall the rubber insulator actually slides down into the steering column, keeps the steering shaft centered in the column. Later model Ford vehicles had a bearing sleeve that worked better than the EFV8. I have used the bearing type sleeve on many vehicles. The spring is attached by pressure only when the horn ring assembly is put into place.

Re: 46-48 steering wheel question
The sponge rubber insulator actually fits into the bottom of the horn ring.

I stand corrected, well maybe.. I have a '36 and a '39 steering column, in stock, they have the rubber bushing in the column. I have a '58 F100 column that has a bearing bushing. My '36 has a '40 column with a '47 steering wheel, the column bushing is the later model bearing type.. works great, with no failure due to rubber degradation.
