Default noisy lifter, what to do?

Hello One and All,

I have a model b motor and one of the #3 cylinder lifters is ticking... are they adjustable? What can I do to make the noise go away??

Any help appreciated...

Best wishes,

If it is "original" the way Ford made it changing the clearance is done by grinding the end of the valve to increase the clearance, replacing the valve, grinding the seat deeper, or facing the valve ---much depends on how much change is needed --

It could have had the lifters changed to adjustable ones, then you just need wrenches and gaskets

Thanks for the info Kurt, I cant wait to sneak a peak...

I hear you PS but I just have to take a look to satisfy my curiosity.

Does anyone know if I can run the motor without the valve cover on? Since its a B motor, there should be oil pressure. Any tips on containing it?

Never tried it, but I am picturing a big oily mess under the hood if you run the engine with the valve cover door off. That oil pump moves a bunch of oil in very little time.

If you had an extra valve cover you could make it sacrificial and cut a view window in it. Maybe even make it so that if you have adjustable lifters you could get at them in-between adjustments and test running the engine. JMHO

I'm not sure why you want to run the engine with the cover off, but I'd assume it's just to better locate the ticking. I'd just check each valve with the engine off and cold. Years ago I'd see a few people who insisted on setting valve clearance with the engine running, but all that does is chew up the feeler guages.

The only reason I would run the engine is to better locate the noisy lifter and then ensure I have the valves properly adjusted (quiet). I wouldn't even know where to start or how to adjust valve clearances with the motor running!

TTF,
A cheap stethescope with the probe removed, just the open hose, run it along close to the side cover & it'll help locate which one. With the probe on, the noise transmits, and it's hard to tell which is the culprit. Bill W.

You may want to read the information Vince has on lifters.

Even after adjusting the valves, mine still has a little ticking. Decided it's just an indicator that it's still in there.

I agree, I'm just looking to get the really noisy lifter to make the "regular" amount of noise like the rest of 'em!

If it has adjustable lifters, then it takes no time at all to adjust them. You can do all 8 in 15 minutes. It takes me longer to clean off the old gasket material and put on a new one with sealer than it does to adjust lifters.
