Wonder if it's because of too many 'siesta' breaks ?

If they are part of a trade embargo then they might be on back order for a while.

After reading all the raving about the Optima batteries, I decided I had to have one but my 7 year old wet cell "Batteries R Us" won't quit. It is kind of like me, at 86 I won't quit so my 35 will go to the younger generation.

Dave, Red tops don't self discharge. A good Red Top will stay charged, and in fact will be better off not on a tender during the winter. They must also be charged at a slow rate, never a quick charge. Just disconnect one post, and keep it out of the weather.

Are they really worth $200? I can buy a bunch of lead acid batteries for that much.

They are worth it, yes. Your bunch of lead acid batteries will each damage your car with acid vapor as they charge. The Optima doesn't normally outgas beyond the mat.

Optima will possibly outlast lead acid battery 4 to 1 or longer
Optima also has 800 cca which is waaaaaayyyyy more than lead acid it can sit for 6 months & still spin your flatty over like a 12v until it sucks gas all way from tank to carb. A feature not possible that I have seen with a 6v lead acid

In 78 years of using lead acid batteries in my car, damage never happened. Not if you clean the area once in a while. I use an Optima in my Vette because they put the computer under the battery (dumb as GM) but never in any of my many cars. There is also an AGM option other than an expensive Optima.

Check with a battery distributor in your area. AGMs are made by various companies. Also sealed. Frankly I don't like the looks of the 6v Optima in a classic car.
