thread size on early Ford grease fitting
What size drill and tap size for early Ford grease fittings, 1/4 NPT?
Going to tap cap on steering box to install grease fitting so I can fill with John Deer corn head grease. 'bout done with horn repair. Should zip it up tomorrow.

Lawson, I believe you are looking for 1/8" pipe. The tap drill for 1/8' pipe is R drill (.399). If you are looking for 1/4" pipe the drill size is 7/16".

I think you'll find the plug in a steering box is something like 5/8 NF, not a regular pipe thread.

Re: thread size on early Ford grease fitting
Thanks. That's what I thought. Just looking for confirmation.

Lawson, a 11/32 drill is .005 larger than the R drill. Try it on a test piece and tap a little at a time until the grease fitting is at the desired depth. |

Re: thread size on early Ford grease fitting
The original cap is only a pressed tin affair, I suspect that if you put a tap through it, there'll be insufficient threads for a grease zerk to hold. Hence, suggest you find a 5/8 bolt.

Re: thread size on early Ford grease fitting
I just use a 1 1/2" long needle grease gun tip to pump JDCH grease into the steering box. The needle allows you to get the grease into the tight spaces.
