Rear Brake Assembly

Need some advice. Following Les's book on reassembly of rear brakes. Call s for assembling the emergency brake carrier with shaft, return spring, and arm onto backing plate.

After doing that I can not get the backing plate on the spindle because of interference of service brake arm and ebrake arm with the yoke.

Trick? What am I missing?

I just saw a YouTube video that suggests taking the radius arm down. Any comments would be appreciated.

I'm sure that is what I had to do. One large bolt at the torque tube end and the two at the brake back plate ought to do it.

Doing my rear brakes now. Yes, you need to remove the radius arm. Also, make sure you install the emergency brake lever springs BEFORE you put the backing plates on. Much easier than fighting with the spring once the plate is on the car.

I had the same question a couple months ago. It probably would have been easier to just remove the radius rod, but I ended up removing the e-brake lever to get the plate on with the radius rod in place. It wasn't all that hard to reinstall the lever and to hook the spring back on. Les Andrews should clarify those instructions in the next reprint of his manual.

I might be mistaken but I think the service brake lever will rotate past the high spot on the cam and point forward. You can then slip it thru and return brake lever back to position.

That's right, but you still can't get it through the fork in the radius rod if the emergency brake lever is in place. Believe me, I tried for over an hour.

I had both sides of my 31 off. I put the emergency brake on after the service brake assy is mounted. I thought I was going to have to remove the wishbone but several said it wasn’t necessary. It just makes it.
