Default Clicking/knocking noise

I have a clicking/knocking noise two times on each revolution with the crank. The crank resistance seems normal with the plugs out. I have every thing out from the oil pump to the distributer. The noise sounds like an impulse coupling releasing on engines that have a magneto. The clicks take place when the crank is at the 6 and 12:00 o'clock position the way I have the crank inserted now. What to look for?

John

Problem solved (I think). The gear portion of the two part timing gear was sliding in and out on the hub portion. Could see it move every time it clicked.
