Default 1936 ford

I have a 1936 ford with a flathead in it, would a 1952 ford flathead fit? I know the motor mounts are not the same but will it fit? thanks Jim

The later 8ba/7rt flathead engines will bolt up in your 36 using pu truck or mercury water pumps, truck or merc bell housing and starter plate adapter, maybe an oil pan change, some changes to adapt a cooling fan, and a couple other minor considerations.
I did this on a 35 coupe in 1960, my first early Ford V-8, with some help from the old timers who had done many of these conversions in the 50's.

Ps...there's nothing wrong with running an original 21 stud, 221 ci engine either, if yours is still in good condition or rebuildable.

There are some folks on Fordbarn who have done that install. The biggest problem is that the 8BA fan pulley set up won't fit in the 36 due to radiator angle and clearance. Quite a bit of "engineering" required besides oil pan, etc.to make it fit and cool properly. Have you done a SEARCH?

Before you decide to replace the '36 engine you have you should find out just what engine you have.. It just might be that your current engine is an LB which is a very desirable engine because it has insert bearings. The LB engines are very sought after engines, therefore they have good resale value.
Using the right combination of Ford parts, the 8BA style of engine is a very easy swap into a '36.. The '49-50 Merc water pumps and motor mount spacers with the Merc/truck bell-housing makes for the easiest install. Use the 36 exhaust manifolds. As it has already been mentioned, the pan might need to be changed. The fan will present a problem.

There's far more room in a pick-up for a fan, rather than in a passenger car. In the CAR, the radiator really leans back at a pretty good angle. DD

I did this for a friends 36 Tudor recently... took a lot more thinking then work... but in the end it fit and worked out well. I personally would stick with the older engines if I had the choice for my own vehicle.

I made an aluminum pulley for the fan that put the forward belt in front of the fan... then an idler pulley to push downward on a belt that went on the crank and 2 water pumps alone...

Here is a link to a not so great photo that I had put on my instagram account...

Yep. The fan will be an issue for sure. My '36 coupe had an electric fan in it which I hated. Those things are noisy and I never could get one to work the way I wanted.

After a bunch of scratching my you know what and some help from a few guys here on the Barn, I was able to build a pretty good belt driven solution. (You guys know who you are!!)

If you do the swap and want more info, let me know.

where are you located? I have several 59ab engines which are an easier swap for your car.
