Default 64 Galaxie Muffler explosion

Take a look at this one. Car was running great and starting off from a traffic light the engine stumbled, I naturally hit the gas and BAM!! the passenger side muffler blew apart at the front top seam. I just had the welded dual exhaust system installed this summer. It was the loudest noise I've heard and amazed the blast didn't cause someone to have an accident.

Same thing happened to me. Was aftermarket electronic ignition failing. I swear car raised up a foot. 1st instinct is always pump the gas and loads up the muffler.

Gasoline can be pretty destructive if the fuel air mix is just right. A bad exhaust valve can also cause an after fire. It's usually an intermittent ignition problem though. You can get a lot of cars to after fire by turning the ignition switch off and back on quickly. The unburned fuel/air mix has no where else to go.

We used to do that on purpose in high school. There was a long hill that was over a 1/4 mile long that we would shut off the ignition and coast for a while, then turn on the key. It usually blew out the insides, but not the case. I guess mufflers were built better back then?
