40 ford front axle

I need to remove the spring perches from the front axle. I have read on the net about heating the front axle and don't heat the axle. I have heated it with a propane torch and melted candle wax in the nut cavity.
I saw the home made puller for pulling the perches but it won't work on a 40 axle. I know this is an open question but I need advice before I proceed further.

Put the nut on the threads a couple turns. Heat the axle up with a decent torch and drive the pin out with a punch and a big hammer. The nut will keep from mushrooming the end. Or use a good air hammer. When you put it back together clean everything and chase the threads. Use neversieze so its easier for the next guy to get it apart

using a press is the only civilized way to not wreck stuff. some are very uncooperative.

OR the correct Snap On perch pin remover but so far I have not meet anyone else that owns one. Mine is in the original snap on metal box with the instructions but I use the cave man technique without wrecking them

I think the press was effective when the cars were less then 20 years old. The rust belt region are most likely tougher to get apart then one from the drier areas. A little heat works wonders

I haven't run into one I wasn't able to remove with my 25 ton press, and have never ruined anything. Most I have removed have let go at about 17 tons.

The snapon press is a fixture that clamps around the axle with a screw to push the pin out. A common hydraulic shop press has one down fall. It's awkward if your by yourself.

I totally agree. Trying to press these pins out of an axle/wishbone assembly in my 40 ton hydraulic press, while working alone, turned out to be an exercises in futilely for me. After getting the assemly properly setup and supported in the press, with liberal amounts of Kroil applied over a period of several days, then heated with a torch, I wound up bending the axle and was never able to remove these pins by this method.

I understand not everyone has a bridge crane and overhead lift capabilities. I almost always work by myself. I would think a hydraulic version of the Snap-On tool would be ideal.

Either way you do it. Caveman or civilized , heat is going to be your friend.

I machined a piece of a cylinder rod and threaded it for the perch. I will place a piece of hardened rod inside so the pressure will be on the perch and not only on the threads when tightened down.
