Accessory wind wings or draft deflectors as they were called. Regular side windows were still in place and these could be swung when the window was down. Here's a picture of another style that was available for '35-'36.

thanks. never knew that. those are some big mounts on the ones in your picture. frameless too. so i'm guessing ford did not offer these.

One thing I like about the 36 window when cranking down, for the first crank it goes horizontal leaving a 1" gap, then it rolls down vertically. Some interesting engineering for a bunch of guys with a slide ruler, protractor, and paper.

A frame-less version was offered by Ford for its '36 model closed cars.

These deflectors were definitely offered by Ford as an authorized accessory under part #'s 48-18298-9 and 68-18298-9. Here are several parts drawings and photos from Ford brochures offering these deflectors.

Don,

We have a set of the 48-prefix wind wings (made by Stant?) for my son-in-law's '36 Tudor which I much prefer because of the streamlined clamps like those for the late '35-'36 roadster and phaeton and because they do not further add to the view obstruction of the A pillar like the 68-prefix version.

I have both kinds as mentioned in Don Rogers post above. They are both available, with new glass and the first one pictured has been replated.
I have decided not to run either of these on my car.
I am under the impression that they may well fit other year models as well.
pm me for details or contact info

I had to replace both of mine on the 36 because the rubber was bad and the metal was rusted, one glass fogged, I was surprised to find them first and almost was ready to pay the $250 for the set, no glass included. I looked around and found them on sale for $125 from Bob Drake, so happy (: I had to buy one piece of glass and have it cut, cost me $48. There all installed and look good.

An interesting accessory, but I couldn't bring myself to drill holes in the doors to install them. I saw them once on a 37 and the doors had to be drilled for screws to hold them on he car.

Yes four screws, they were already on my car so I just updated them.

Interesting thread. Does anyone know if these would work on 35-37 pickup? Inquiring minds want to know..

Lawson, your pickup door windows are a totally different shape to the passenger vehicles so the wind wings would not fit too well....

Lawson you could probably use the 2 piece wing brackets and have a piece of glass cut to the truck profile opening. The ones I have are not mounted to the car window glass that I also have, worth a try if you are interested.

John. I sent you a PM.

Does anyone know if these would work on a pickup?

Yep, for my pickup. My real wings are hanging up on a nail, just waiting for me to pick them up someday before too much longer.

I have a pair of wind wings that look exactly like the pair shown in #1 of this topic.
They were on my '36 coupe in the early '50's, did not like them so I removed them and put them away..
The style of wind wing that reputedly is a correct Ford accessory is a much better style with the traditional glass clamping attachments, however, I must admit that the thin frames that hold the class to the mounting plate look very good, especially without the large rubber surround as used on one style of wind wing.

The style of wind wing I have attaches to the door with two very small screws, one on the lower edge and one on the upper..
