transmission type or number.
Picked up a 1956 ford car, 272 with 3spd, (non overdrive), no tag on the case, what would that trans be listed as, I know its not a T-87, but should have a number something like that, looks the same as a flathead trans.

Borg Warner T-86. It was used behind 6 cylinders, flatheads and smaller y-blocks.

The type of cover will tell. T86 has a top cover plate similar to the later top loader transmissions. The T85 has the side shift cover with a curved shape to the bottom edge of the cover. The T259 has a rectangular shaped side shift cover. Ford used all three but the T85 is the heavy duty one.
