Do any of the Model A suppliers sell rattle can paint that match the original colors?

I don't believe so, but I would highly recommend powder coat. Much more durable.

Take you paint and finish guide to a local auto body supply store and have em mix it in a spray can for you. But as Bill mentions, powder coat is the way many guys go these days.

Powder coating is the optimum finish for wheels, but it is expensive.

Here are my lessons learned:
1. Be absolutely sure there are no defects in the wheels (especially cracks) beforehand because they will show through the powder coating. Have the wheels sandblasted first so you can thoroughly inspect them before giving the wheels to the powder coating shop;
2. Inspect the weld attachments of the spokes for residual old paint. Any paint in the welds will bleed through the powder coating, so you may need to do some extra paint removal;
3. The powder coating shop may not have powder in the authentic color you want. In this case you need to provide the powder or identify to the shop a source for authentic powder. Powder in Model "A" colors is expensive;
4. There is a difference between Straw and Tacoma Cream. Straw is loser to Yellow in color. The picture is a wheel done in Tacoma Cream;
5. If you want Vermilion or Black powder coating, use the shops standard powder colors to save lots of $$$$$. You may also be able to get a reasonable standard powder match for Apple Green and Straw.

do not let rust get underneath or you will end up with junk wheels , paint is easier to touch up.

Bought a model “A” with black powder coated wheels. Never gave it much thought but upon close inspection all five wheels had bent spokes. Just who in the hell would do that. Trump

Are you doing a fine points car, or just cleaning up a daily driver? For my daily driver I found a product from Rustolem that matches the Tacoma Cream pretty damned well.

I especially like that I can easily do touch ups when I get a ding or a chip! Try to do that with expensive powder coat.

Unfortunately, I am out of town right now, so I can't walk out to the garage and look at the can, but I'm pretty sure this is what it is. I will confirm when I get home.

Can you have powdered coated wheels in fine point cars,can you tell that it is not painted by looking at them

I was looking to paint my wheels "straw" a couple years ago. I took the Antique Ford Paint Manual to a big box store and found that Rustoleum's Gloss Warm Yellow was a very close match. I'm color blind but my wife is an artist and she thinks the color is right on. Again this a driver and not a show car.

I have done both methods of painting, powder and paint. Like mentioned, I think I like the paint idea better that the powder because it can be redone when needed. But both my rigs are drivers so that is why I did both.

I'm also not a fan of powder coating for the mentioned reasons plus it seem to fade.

I used Krylon "Buttercream" #2334 https://www.amazon.com/Krylon-K02334...gateway&sr=8-1 on my wheels. Seems pretty close to Tacoma Cream with my messed up eyes...

Which "the green"? There were many greens used by Ford on the A.


Here is the problem, you have no idea if the color you have on the car is the exact shade that Ford used. There are fading problems as well even if it were.


Drive it down to a paint supplier and have the scan it. This will give the closest match to what they have in their data base. This does not mean you will get an exact match to the color on your car it will get you close. The supplier will have to tweek the color to exactly "panel match" your car.

I ordered a bottle from amazon. I have 5 wheels that i still need to sandblast and then paint. Also I have the same color in my in use wheels. It will help for small scratches.

If you have spray gun/ compressor, use acrylic enamel or single stage mixed by TCP global in Cal. They have the Model A colors or send them a sample to custom mix.. I needed 4 qts for 5 or 6 wheels diluted with reducer and hardener. Much easier to touch up than powder coat, and store in cool/ dry location. Will last a long time.
As you know, powder coat is baked and can be used with special powder coat primers than withstand the 400+ deg. needed to fill pits, etc..

After I had my wheels bead blasted I applied two coats of self etching primer and then three coats of color. I can’t remember for sure but I think it took about 10-12 cans of color to get the wheels like I wanted them.

Obviously there are two sides to this debate, but I was getting a set of wheels ready for powder coat. In straightening spikes etc, I was amazed at how easily paint chips. Yes it is easy to repaint, but unless you sand them down, the divot still shows. My roadster has wheels that were powder coated, 8 years ago, and they still look perfect. It is a driver, and has been on dirt roads many times. So I am still an ardent fan.

Powder coating is beautiful - til it becomes obvious that the wheel steel is disintegrating underneath! Don't believe it? Go to a marina (Freshwater) and check out the old trailers that were powder coated . You will find a perfect envelope of coating surrounding the literally, rotten steel of the trailer frame. It looks nice, but........ I'm going to try Magnet Paint, Chassis Saver (Google) Two light coats and a top coat. It's like a poor mans POR 15. Don't put the cap on the can with out a cellophane skin over the can. If it gets into the groove it'll lock your cap on. You'll be drilling holes in the to of the can to get the paint out. Don't get it on your hands , it has wear off. It takes over a month. Anyway, That's what I'm going to do!

I seem to remember that it took about a can and a half per wheel, but mine were in pretty rough shape.
