Default windshield wipers

the wipers on my 56 fairlane are very slow. does not seem to be any leaks in the line from the fuel pump.
any ideas other than replacing motor or going electric.

Cool Re: windshield wipers

Do you have a SHOP MANUAL? The easiest and quickest way to go about it is to follow the diagnostic sequence in that manual. Otherwise you are going to hear all kinds of suggestions that will have you chasing your tail.

Quote:
A combination fuel pump and vacuum booster is standard equipment on cars equipped with Overdrive or Fordomatic.

My learned factoid of the day. I did not know that. I was under the impression that it was included with hi-trim levels or was an option.

Try this:

Here's how to lubricate the motor, which should be done three or four times a year:

1. Remove the vacuum hose at the wiper motor. Lightly hold your finger over the hose nipple on the motor and cycle the wiper blade back and forth.. Note that in one direction the motor sucks in air, and in the opposite direction, the motor expels air through the nipple. Place the wiper blade in the position such that the motor will begin to suck air at the nipple.
2. Attach a six‐inch long piece of hose to the motor nipple and hold the open end up. Using a squeeze bottle, force one teaspoonful of lubricant into the hose.
3. Cycle the wiper blade back and forth several times. Repeat the process again, adding a second teaspoonful of lubricant.
4. Start the engine and run the wiper motor. It should run well. If it does not, the wiper motor should be disassembled, cleaned, inspected and a rebuilding kit installed. It is normal for the wipers to slow down when the car is accelerated, but they should not stop altogether.

Use a light machine oil such as 3 in 1.

This is an issue where beginning the investigation at the source may save some time.
If your manifold vacuum is low, you may experience slow wiper movement, even though you may have a vacuum booster on your fuel pump. After all, it is a booster.
Check intake manifold vacuum at engine idle. Should be around 19 on the guage.
If that is okay, pull the rubber hose off the vacuum wiper motor and connect vacuum guage to the hose. If the vacuum is lower, there's a crack in the rubber hose feeding the system. Or, could be vacuum booster diaphragm is cracked.

19-20 in per FORD spec.

Valve and IGN timing are crucial to achieve it. Remember, the booster pump does not cut in until manifold vacuum drops to a certain point. It is not continuous operation.

Of course all of this info is readily available in the correct year SHOP MANUAL.
