Help with Wheels!!
I was having some new tires put on all the way around. I was just told there are some rust holes on the rims. I have read about rebuilding these wheels. Is it better to rebuild or buy new wheels. I would prefer to keep the dollars as low as possible. This is not a show car and is being restored by my 17 year old son and not a show car. Can the holes be welded closed without compromising integrity of the wheels? Thanks for the help.

Re: Help with Wheels!!
If it were mine I would go for new or better used originals. If the rims are rusted through they are most likely thin in other parts. Not good to have one come apart on the hi way.

Re: Help with Wheels!!
Definitely a safety issue. Obviously best to change them out if new or good used rims can be located for reasonable $$.

Re: Help with Wheels!!
Repair consideration always hinges on how bad the cancer is there. One little pit can be easily brazed or welded without compromise of the wheel structure but a large group of pits with associated pebbling of the metal puts the question of repair into a different category. Heavy pebbling compromises the structural integrity.

Re: Help with Wheels!!
How about a photo of the holes or a description of how big they are and where they are located on the wheel. Where are you located ? I have some good wheels. What size are the wheels ?

Re: Help with Wheels!!
How about some pictures of the wheels and the rust holes. Not knowing what you have makes it hard to make meaningful suggestions.
You should also add your general location to your profile so people can recommend places to repair the wheels. Charlie Stephens |

Re: Help with Wheels!!
I am located northwest of Indianapolis. I brought the first wheel in question to the welding shop, so no photos yet. They are 19 inch wheels.

Re: Help with Wheels!!
Before you commit to the welding have you checked them to see if they are out of round or have run out? How are the lug nut holes, out of round or cracked? Are the spokes straight and firmly attached at both ends? You don't want to spend the money for the welding and then have to scrap them. My guess is that a good used wheel is about $75 dollars. Others please comment here since I haven't shopped seriously for a wheel in a long time. Get this number and keep it in mind when you are at the welding shop. Sure like to see some photos, celll phone photos are fine.
